Black vinyl, 12" (33 RPM), in a gatefold sleeve. First pressing of 300 copies. Formed in Athens in 1987, ROTTING CHRIST is one of the most prolific and diverse extreme metal bands, architects of a sound that has constantly oscillated between black metal, gothic atmosphere, and dark rituals for nearly four decades. ‘Sleep of the Angels’ (1999) marks the culmination of a deliberate artistic turning point: the fifth album from the Greek duo sees brothers Sakis and Themis Tolis move furthest away from their black metal roots, delivering a record characterized by melodic depth, a dark atmosphere, and a haunting romanticism that is both immersive and intimate. Produced by Xy of Samael at Woodhouse Studios, the album revolves around Sakis's powerful guitar work and a constant, ethereal presence of keyboards, giving the whole a nearly sacred dimension. The vocals oscillate between characteristic screams and lower clean singing, creating an intimate tension that permeates the entire album. From the martial and enchanting power of “Cold Colors” to the seductive threat of the single “After Dark I Feel,” through the gothic grandeur of “Victoriatus” and the final epic “Thine Is the Kingdom,” the album forms a coherent whole. It is the most gothic work of the band, and for a whole generation of listeners who grew up during the golden age of dark metal in the late 90s, it remains one of those albums to which one returns without even realizing it. For fans of NIGHTFALL, MOONSPELL, SEPTICFLESH, PRIMORDIAL, VARATHRON. Artwork by Stephen Kasner.
