The second album from Detroit trio Ritual Howls tells tales worthy of Poe or Lovecraft. On their debut for felte, titled Turkish Leather (2014), they incorporate a variety of styles into a sinisterly assured statement of intent, the sounds of Ben Saginaw and Chris Samuels providing an imposing form for Paul Bancell's darkly vivid lyrics. Their influences range from English post-punk to Nick Cave to the industrial sounds of Skinny Puppy, and the band expertly merges them. Combining field recordings with electronics, this music is sound design turned pop.
