In 2005 on The Last & Lost Blues Survivor, a compilation from the American label Music Maker aimed at rehabilitating forgotten musicians, we discovered a voice that would not leave us: that of Pura Fé, a Tuscarora Indian, artist, and activist. Three albums followed with Dixiefrog, imposing on our ears an exceptional singer between folk, blues, and traditional music of the Native Americans of North Carolina. Pura Fé today marks her arrival at Nueva Onda Records with Sacred Seed, eleven tracks accompanied by a new artistic direction under the guidance of Mathis Haug, who oversaw the recording in a farmhouse in the south of France. The singer abandons her lap-steel guitar to focus on wonderful vocal harmonies, echoing the cello of Eric Longsworth among a stripped-down orchestration completed by Stéphan Notari (piano, percussion) and Mathis himself (guitar, banjo). On compositions that draw their strength from pre-blues Native American tradition, and on lyrics that tell the humanistic convictions of their author, in addition to covers of Duke Ellington (“In a Sentimental Mood”) and Norman Greenbaum (“Spirit In The Sky”), Pura Fé signs her most intimate and adventurous album yet.
