Oum

Zarabi

Description

A Moroccan artist of Saharan descent, Oum immediately impresses with her powerful yet sensitive style. With her sensual voice, she explores the diversity of Moroccan music, infusing it with soul, Gnawa, and Hassani rhythms. Inspired by the music of her homeland, Africa in general, and jazz, she reveals a moving, sincere, and committed personality, creating a light musical universe where her Saharan origins resonate. Her new album, "Zarabi," for which Oum takes on the role of artistic director for the first time (alongside Mathis Haug) and features two collaborators from her previous album: Damian Nueva and Yacir Rami, was recorded in two unusual locations: the Domaine de la Gérarderie in Normandy and the desert village of M'hamid El Ghizlane. "Zarabi," meaning "carpets" in Moroccan Darija, is a tribute to the carpet weavers of that same village. These artisans craft their carpets from used clothing provided by the customers themselves, thus weaving together the sartorial memory of a family into a single creation. Oum felt a deep connection between her creative work, her compositions, and the artisans' memorial weaving.
