Multi-instrumentalist and composer Nicholas Payton brings together a visionary trio with bassist and singer esperanza spalding and drummer Karriem Riggins on his new album TRIUNE, which also features guest appearances from Ivan Neville, Erica Falls, Nikki Glaspie, and Otis McDonald. Music history is replete with remarkable trios. But few – like the innovative trumpeter, keyboardist, and composer Nicholas Payton – are capable of bringing together three true visionaries and fusing their voices into a single creative energy. This is precisely what Payton achieves with TRIUNE, his exhilarating new album released on Smoke Sessions Records, where he is joined by esperanza spalding (double bass, vocals) and Karriem Riggins (drums). “TRIUNE means ‘three in one,’ which perfectly reflects the essence of this trio,” explains Payton. “Each of us is a leader in our own right, but together, we create a unified and singular sound.” This album marks the reunion of a rhythm section that Payton originally brought together in 2010 in a quartet with pianist Taylor Eigsti. Even then, Karriem Riggins could boast over fifteen years of experience, comfortable in all territories of African American music. A master of swing alongside figures such as Mulgrew Miller, Ray Brown, Eric Reed, Oscar Peterson, and Milt Jackson, he was equally immersed in the hip-hop scene, collaborating with renowned artists like Common, J Dilla, Daft Punk, and Erykah Badu.
