My Bloody Valentine - the quartet formed by Bilinda Butcher, Kevin Shields, Deb Googe, and Colm Ó Cíosóig - is one of the most innovative and influential bands of the last forty years. At a time when English guitar bands displayed, at best, a certain retro-classicism, my bloody valentine was unlike any of its contemporaries and sounded like the future. Finally reappearing in 2013 after two whole decades of relative obscurity, ‘m b v’, the band's third album, is its most experimental but also its most melodic and immediate record, a tangible proof of its unwavering desire for reinvention. Continuing to push the boundaries of music and genre, ‘m b v’ is a sensational album, some sounds of which could claim to belong to a type never realized before. More intimate and visceral, ‘m b v’ is a surprising and magnificent metamorphosis of what was known of the sound of my bloody valentine, pushing boundaries like no other band. The closing track of the album, “Wonder 2,” is an example, seeing Shields merge a hypnotic guitar with drum’n’bass for a prodigious result.
