Menace II Society is an American thriller released in 1993 and directed by Allen and Albert Hughes at the start of their career. The cast includes Jada Pinkett and Samuel L. Jackson, among others. The story takes place in the 1990s in the South Central neighborhood of Los Angeles and depicts the ultra-violent daily life of a young man from the neighborhood, Kaydee 'Caine' Lawson, and his crew. Famous for its violent and profane scenes, the film denounces a harsh reality that resonated in many urban communities around the world. The film's soundtrack also stood out for the quality of its tracklist, rich in old school rap and gangsta rap gems. It reached number one on the Billboard Hip Hop chart upon its release and was certified platinum in October 1994.
