PAPARA (vinyl)

Description

On the island of Crete, the ancient practice of dipping your bread in various sauces and preparations is called 'papara'. True to their music-as-sauce philosophy, Brussels' own groove outfit M.CHUZI invites you to 'dip' your ear into the sonic sauces on offer in their versatile menu. The collective's debut album 'Papara' is an inviting mouthful of afro rhythms, funk and progressive jazz, combined with the spatial soundscapes of the Brussels metropolis, as they look to the afrobeat style of Fela Kuti for inspiration. It’s the savoury 'Tzatzìki' that kicks off 'Papara', a joyous exotic bombardment of sparkling percussion and a brass explosion that follows. Next up is the heavy acid rock of 'Mammoet' featuring upcoming trombonist Nabou, who appears in a groove-laden blend of Egyptian-inspired horns and Fela-esque rhythms, before poetic warrior Joy Slam adds her voice to the dub-centric rhythms of the mellow 'Carbonade'.Elsewhere, 'Intermetsauce' merges whimsical horns with funky drums while the spicy 'Tahini Miso' comes to life with trance-inducing rhythms and a mystical Middle Eastern seasoning. The album ends with the multi-rhythms of the burning 'Sambal', before diving into the funky "Pickles", featuring the wild scratch talents of Mixmaster Menno (STUFF.). With each track named after a favourite sauce of a band member or featured artist, M.CHUZI serves you a varied and tasty plate of unique compositions, taking afro-groove and its descendants to a new level of eclectic vibrancy.
