Max de Wardener returns to the Village Green label with an album of detuned acoustic piano pieces performed by British jazz pianist Kit Downes (ECM). Taking inspiration from modernist composers James Tenney, Harry Partch and La Monte Young, Wardener’s intentions here were “to try and twist something established and monumental into something new”. The resulting album is deceptively simple, braving the project’s countless technical challenges (pianos are extremely stubborn when subjected to unorthodox tuning methods). Captured over a two-year period, Downes' invigorating improvisations of the justice to Wardener's vision by creating an elegant record that feels both familiar, yet otherworldly.
