If one can legitimately doubt his talents as a composer and leader (kicking good musicians, potential collaborators, out of his group is not always very wise), it must be recognized that Marilyn Manson has a good nose when it comes to covers. After Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This) and Tainted Love which enhanced a repertoire defended with rage and conviction but with somewhat bland melodic flavors, the emperor of shock rock offers here, as a new song first released as a single meant to boost the sales of this compilation, a rather successful cover of Personal Jesus (Depeche Mode). Certainly, fired one after the other, and at full volume, mObscene, The Dope Show or The Beautiful People work well enough, but that is not really the question. Big mouth with exaggerated ambitions on display, Manson must sing excellent songs and not these slogans set against a somewhat clunky metal backdrop that he often delivers in their place. The Deluxe version of Lest We Forget is accompanied by a bonus DVD of polished clips, but it is recommended not to watch alone at night.
