A certain taste for Grand Guignol and constant provocation does not prevent having talent... and humor. This second album by Marilyn Manson (after Portrait Of An American Family and the EP Smells Like Children) superbly demonstrates this. Produced by Trent Reznor (Nine Inch Nails) and Dave Ogilvie (Skinny Puppy), which is evident, Antichrist Superstar fills its metal with industrial references ("Dried Up, Tied...", "Mister Superstar"), new wave ("Deformography"), pompous gothic ("Beautiful People") and quirky finds ("Cryptorchid" sometimes resembles Kraftwerk on helium). Brian Warner sings his "anthems to hate" with the deep voice of a deranged crooner who has overindulged in reruns of The Exorcist. And he wins his bet: America loved his record... as much as it hates his band.
