Mahku

Description

Manizeh Rimer, founder of the London label Love Supreme Projects, announces the release of her debut album, Mahku, via LEITER. A bold contribution to contemporary spiritual jazz, this album was co-produced by Ganavya, a member of the LEITER label, who recently released the acclaimed Daughter of a Temple and Nilam. Recorded in early 2025 at LEITER's Funkhaus Studio in Berlin, Mahku offers eight chants, including a revisited version of Fleetwood Mac's Landslide, with Ganavya on three tracks. The album brings together an exceptional cast: Jai Uttal, bassists Ben Hazleton and Doug Weiss; harpist Miriam Adefris; pianist Jay Verma; and Manizeh's teenage daughter, Mahku Rimer, on vocals and guitar. The tracks range from a 3,000-year-old Zoroastrian prayer ("Ashem Vohu") to Sanskrit and Buddhist mantras ("Asato Ma", "Gate Gate Paragate"), as well as the devotional chant "Avan's Sita Ram". Mahku means "eclipse" and is also the name of Manizeh's grandmother. The fruit of her long practice of singing and her deep creative partnership with Ganavya, the album opens and closes with three generations of women's voices, exploring music as a timeless, intergenerational loop. Mahku is both a personal ritual and a universal offering, traversing lineage, loss, and love.
