It took a certain determination (and a good deal of recklessness) to embark on the path of cold wave in 1982, in Nancy, Eastern France. He, Spatsz, fiddles with machines; she, Mona, sings and plays guitar. An unconventional duo, KaS Product burst onto the scene with "Try Out", a veritable slap in the face. Here, synths send out more or less unsettling waves, while Mona Soyoc's voice brings a suave, at times even jazzy, tone to this dark and edgy music. Far from cultivating French melancholy, KaS Product looked to the United States, and their synthetic punk seriously shook things up with tracks like "Never Come Back" or "So Young And So Cold". Sexy and uncompromising, "Try Out" marked the near-perfect debut of the Nancy-based duo, immediately standing out in the small post-punk world of France at the time. And this music, with its minimalist production, has thankfully aged very well.
