Music is like literature: getting past the second novel or second album often proves to be a very perilous exercise. Propelled into the spotlight after the explosive Try Out, Spatsz and Mona Soyoc went to New York to record a follow-up to this fabulous debut. You don't change a winning formula, and By Pass (1983) follows in the sonic and musical footsteps of its predecessor. With the same sticky synth pads and the same raw vocals, capable of voluptuous flights of fancy, KaS Product still navigates the murky waters of a nervous and insalubrious cold wave, somewhere between the venom of Suicide and the gothic chants of Siouxsie. And the melodies are still there, as on the amazing “Tina Town” and “T.M.T”, some of the most successful tracks on an album that remarkably holds its own and also deserves attention for its detours, such as “Taking Shape” or “Tape” at the end of the disc.
