Transcendental poetry meets Southern Nightmare Jazz on the third album from Alabama-native poet and artist Johnny Coley. Mister Sweet Whisper is Johnny Coley teaming up with the band Worst Spills, led by guitarist and arranger Joel Nelson. Imagine William Burroughs meets the LoungeLizards in a haunted swamp. Joined by the band’s vibraphonist and flutist, Jasper Lee, Mister Sweet Whisper frames Coley as a gifted wordsmith and a singular voice, backed by an eclectic cast of friends and collaborators. The textured, jazz-adjacent playing complements Coley’s decadent landscapes, which slip out like cigarette-inspired invocations. Echoing, sometimes dissonant, saxophone honks, crystalline vibraphone tones, and jagged guitar arrangements punctuate Coley’s dreamlike visions, populated by ballet dancers, haunting nightclubs, and ghostly car drivers. The songs on Mister Sweet Whisper, both nostalgic and expansive, speak to Coley’s talent and his natural ability to channel his poetic universe into songs. Includes a 4-page booklet with illustrations and texts by Johnny.
