The viola master of the Durutti Column—composer and arranger for artists such as U2, Coldplay, Peter Gabriel and Blur, and co-founder with Tony Wilson of the Factory Classical label—was composing music spontaneously, instinctively, when the idea for Tree took root. The album was born from John Metcalfe's desire to write on a large scale—perhaps a natural reaction for a composer writing from the silences and solitude of our recent pandemic years.
