The Durutti Column’s viola master – composer and arranger for artists such as U2, Coldplay, Peter Gabriel and Blur, and co-founder with Tony Wilson of the Factory Classical label – was composing music spontaneously, instinctively, when the idea for Tree was sparked. The album grew from a desire for Metcalfe to write on a grand scale – perhaps a natural reaction for a composer who writes from the silences and solitude of our recent pandemic years.
