A lot has changed in the musical life of renowned composer and director John Carpenter since 2016’s Lost Themes II. Following that album’s release, he embarked on his very first concert tour, performing both Lost Themes alongside music from his cult films. He re-recorded several of his classic themes for his 2017 album, Anthology, alongside his son Cody Carpenter and godson Daniel Davies. The following year, he was invited to produce and compose the music for David Gordon Green’s new Halloween film, which quickly became the most profitable installment in the series. He now returns with his first non-soundtrack album in almost five years, Lost Themes III: Alive After Death. John Carpenter’s musical revival has been defined by his collaboration with Cody Carpenter and Daniel Davies. They have composed and performed as a trio on studio albums, film soundtracks, and live on stage. Here, the trio reaches an entirely new level of creative fusion. Rich and profound worlds are created at the intersection of Davies' guitar and the Carpenters' synthesizer duel. The trio begins by crafting a theme, a bassline, a pad, something that sounds good and leads them to the next layer. From this stage, each understands the other's strengths and weaknesses, how to communicate without speaking, and thus the creative process flows smoothly. While the original Lost Themes album was a pleasant surprise after years of silence from Carpenter, his third opus places him at the heart of a powerful cultural resurgence. The 2018 Halloween soundtrack allowed his music to reach its widest audience, and the world into which he releases his new album is one that has finally given him the recognition he deserves as a founding father of modern electronic music.
