The pifano, pifaro or pife, which creates the characteristic melodies of these tracks, is a simple seven-hole wind instrument originating from northeastern Brazil. Often made of bamboo or taquara wood, it is rich in folk musical traditions and combined with percussion instruments to form the Bandas de Pifanos, groups originating from the northeastern states of the country. "Pifeiros" such as João do Pife, Edmilson do Pifano, and Carlos Malta have brought the pifano to a wider audience through their albums and vinyl releases. From the rich legacy of the pifano master, these two enchanting and timeless tracks are taken from his highly sought-after LP Folclore Alagoano, released in 1975 on the Tropicana label. Born João Alfredo Marques dos Santos in 1943, in Riacho das Almas, João do Pife became an ambassador for the culture and folklore of northern Brazil through his music, which placed the pifano at the heart of the action.
