The undisputed master of the Hammond organ, from which he alone could coax a blues with a sharp groove, Jimmy Smith embodied the perfection of this instrument and became its most important spokesperson. In the early 1950s, the young organist accompanied some of the greatest bandleaders and jazz pioneers, such as Lalo Shiffrin, Oliver Nelson, as well as Wes Montgomery, Hank Mobley, Lee Morgan, Lou Donaldson and many others.
Recorded on April 25, 1960, during the same studio session as the previous album ‘Back At The Chicken Shake’, ‘Midnight Special’ is considered the most important classic of Jimmy Smith's solo career. Blending irresistible soul jazz groove with rhythm and blues magnified by the master's virtuosity, this opus remains today one of the organist's behemoths.
