Jim Mullen is a guitarist who has spanned decades and genres: from rock to bebop, and jazz-funk, and who, incidentally, counts Jim Hall and George Benson among his influences. He recounts: "I was born in Glasgow in 1945, into a working-class family. My father was a carpenter and tried to make me a guitar. He managed to make the body, but the neck was too complicated. I ended up being able to buy one by saving the money I earned delivering newspapers. I was a fan of skiffle and Lonnie Donegan. I also listened to my mother sing with the radio. She listened to artists like Crosby, Sinatra, Bennett, those timeless singers who are etched in my memory even today." After leaving school, Mullen led a double life: journalist by day and musician by night. He experienced all the difficulties a young musician trying to make it can encounter: "In the mid-seventies, I had my guitar and a suitcase. I was sleeping on the floor at a friend's house, in a house that was about to be demolished. I had nothing and thought about quitting music."
