'TRIBE FROM THE ASHES' THE JAZZ, SPIRITUAL & SOUL COLLECTIVE BORN OUT OF LOCKDOWN. 'TRIBE FROM THE ASHES' opens with a haunting bass loop, a flute and strings riff: the track sets the tone, this 16-musician collective has energy to transmit by offering all forms of Great Black Music. Throughout the album, the music unfolds in a generous banquet: from groove to gospel, from Coltrane-esque walls of notes to melodies worthy of Sun Ra, from fusion escapades to irresistible folk-tinged ballads. From the first notes, one is immersed in a bath of soul, jazz, and poetry full of humanity and commitment. Music that is organic, raw, and orchestral all at once. A project, born from the urgency to create during lockdown, which gives ample room to imagination and advocates collective investment. The energy flows in the tradition of great Spiritual Jazz ensembles: one thinks of AACM, Nina Simone, Alice Coltrane, Sun Ra, or even the Art Ensemble of Chicago, but also War, Mandrill, and other soul artists. At the helm, the inspiring Sandra Nkaké and Jî Drû bring together the current generation of jazz: Thomas de Pourquery, Anne Paceo, Marion Rampal, Antoine Berjeaut, Sophie Bernado, and pillars of French Jazz Groove such as Jean-Phi Dary, Disco Minck, and Jérôme Perez. Alongside them are young emerging musicians like Mathilda Haynes, Paul Colomb, and Mathieu Penot. An ideal Superband for a true musical epic. In concert, the collective fully comes into its own and invites prestigious guests such as Lionel Belmondo. There is also something of the 60s and 70s in the music of this Tribe, where each member is a pillar. The orchestration (double bass, drums, piano, harp, saxophone, flute, sax, trumpet) also recalls the golden age of jazz while giving a prominent place to string and vocal arrangements. One travels through the irresistible groove of Soul Music in the fiery solos of Thomas de Pourquery on Welkin and Antoine Berjeaut on Come Closer, all the way to Jî Drû's flute swirls on Nineteen. Eurydice, the anthem to sisterhood, reveals the harmony of Sandra Nkaké and Marion Rampal's voices, while Rewind serves the cause of P-funk. The graphic universe, entrusted to Maya Mihindou, illuminates this Tribe in search of betterment. On the last track, Jî Drû's voice resonates like a manifesto: 'TRIBE FROM THE ASHES' is a true promise! "The old world has burned and its ashes fly away. 'Tribe From the Ashes' is an album that says anything is still possible, together. This music is our ability to imagine spaces of freedom, a new world, a source of hope, comfort, and inspiration."
