The charismatic Danish tenor saxophonist Jan Harbeck already has four albums released under his own name on the Stunt label. He has won a Danish Music Award and received the Ben Webster and Bent Jædig awards. The quartet's releases are among the best-selling Danish instrumental jazz albums of this decade. Having toured the biggest local venues for years, Harbeck and his band have also won the hearts of audiences across the rest of Europe. In addition to his own band, Jan Harbeck plays with numerous groups such as the Tivoli Big Band, Niels Jørgen Steen's Monday Night Big Band, and with drummer Snorre Kirk's band, whose latest album was a great success in France. Harbeck's expressive and extroverted playing is rooted in the swing tradition. An original and elegant musician, he is one of the rare saxophonists capable of imbuing so much soul into a jazz ballad. As Thomas Michelsen wrote in Politiken (Danish newspaper) "Before, we had Ben Webster to awaken our soul. Today we have Jan Harbeck!" It is rather surprising that this 43-year-old saxophonist had not recorded a tribute to the man known as "Big Ben" until now. This is rectified with his new release, The Sound The Rhythm.
