Acclaimed songwriters Jake Xerxes Fussell and James Elkington score their first film, Rebuilding, the moving new film written and directed by Max Walker-Silverman. The film, starring Josh O’Connor, Lily LaTorre, and Kali Reis, had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. Following recent solo projects—Fussell’s fifth album was released in July and Elkington’s double LP is due in March 2025—this soundtrack marks a natural convergence of their worlds. Together, they weave textured music, subtly integrated into the film’s quiet poetry. Producer Dan Janvey first recommended Fussell’s music to the director, who immediately found a resonance: “I heard cinema right away. His music is rooted in folk traditions I love, but without nostalgia—exactly like our film, where the past surfaces but remains anchored in the present. And since much of his work is instrumental, Jake already understood the art of storytelling without words.”
