Herlin Riley explains: "In a way, this album is a transition from my role as a musical partner with Ahmad Jamal or Wynton Marsalis to that of a leader, as a composer and arranger. Like Art Blakey, I try to maintain a certain exuberance by surrounding myself with younger musicians, while helping them find their own path. So many important drummers come from New Orleans: Vernel Fournier, Earl Palmer, Ziggy Modeliste, or Idris Muhammad; since I started playing drums at the age of three, they are my main reference. I walk in the footsteps of giants!" This beautiful tradition of New Orleans percussion is still alive. Herlin Riley is a modern representative of it. He gives a dazzling demonstration here, which will delight, beyond the circle of percussionists, all lovers of vibrant, open, and inspired jazz.
