Saxophonist Immanuel Wilkins returns with a new album, titled *The 7th Hand*. This new work features a seven-movement suite performed by his quartet—Micah Thomas on piano, Daryl Johns on bass, and Kweku Sumbry on drums—alongside special guests such as flutist Elena Pinderhughes and the Farafina Kan percussion ensemble.
This hour-long suite, composed of seven movements, endeavors to bring the quartet together into a complete whole from start to finish, with the music being entirely collectively improvised. The title is derived from a question steeped in biblical symbolism: if the number six represents the extent of human possibilities, Wilkins wondered what it would be like to invoke divine intervention and allow this seventh element to possess his quartet.
