Iiro Rantala is a jazz chameleon who loves to perform in many forms. The Finnish pianist always surprises with the concepts of his albums, especially those of his solo piano projects. For "My Finnish Calendar," he turned a new page. It is improvised music but with an extra-musical narrative: from a very personal and Finnish perspective, he set to music the passage of an entire year in his homeland, and he did it with his characteristic blend of melodic inventiveness, melancholy, and humor. His finesse and technical mastery, acquired over the years, have been applied here with an infallible instinct to bring the essential to the forefront. Each piece of this album represents a month of the year, and each also exists as an independent artistic statement. And while the plot does not always emerge directly from the music, Rantala has provided hilarious explanations and anecdotes in his booklet.
