Tenor saxophonist Hank Mobley was in peak form in 1960 when he recorded ‘Roll Call’, the middle album of a trilogy of hard bop masterpieces that included his equally essential albums ‘Soul Station’ and ‘Workout’. For ‘Roll Call’, Mobley brought together the rhythm section from Soul Station—pianist Wynton Kelly, bassist Paul Chambers, and drummer Art Blakey—with the addition of Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, delivering an exhilarating six-track hard bop masterclass.
