Grégory Privat presents 'Soley', his first album on the Buddham Jazz label. For this album, which he intended to be without boundaries, the pianist and composer has penned 15 tracks arranged for trio, drawing from the rich musical traditions of jazz, Caribbean music, electronic music, and vocals. 'Soley', whose title alludes to the symbol of a hopeful light, reflects this risk-taking and is unlike any of his previous works: it reveals a hybrid universe where jazz, Caribbean music, and electronic music, piano and synthesizer, the legacy of the jazz trio, classical tradition, and song coexist and intertwine. For the first time, Grégory Privat also reveals himself as a singer, bringing to Soley a vocal dimension that straddles the instrumental and the narrative, which he had previously entrusted to others or reserved for live performances, and which gives his music an emotional power greater than ever before. To bring his vision to life, he assembled a trio whose contrasts reflect those of this album he wanted to be without barriers. Drummer Tilo Bertholo (Jowee Omicil, Ralph Lavital), already present on Family Tree, connects Soley to Antillean music and Afro-American groove, while bassist Chris Jennings (Joachim Kühn, Dhafer Youssef) draws from both his classical training and his jazz experience. The tracks on this album, penned by the pianist and arranged for trio, draw from the musical richness of an Afro-Caribbean culture also marked by the horrors of slavery. Music full of hope, optimism, and intense vital energy. Nominated for the Victoires du Jazz 2015 in the Revelation Jazz category, Grégory Privat continues his ascent to the zenith of jazz.
