Mississippi Records’ obsession with Greek underground music continues with 10 ultra-rare recordings from rebetiko legend, Giorgos Katsaros. Katsaros, who by some accounts lived to be over 100 years old, transported ancient Greek songs to the diaspora of the United States, bridging centuries of music within one lifetime. Katsaros developed a style that reflected his upbringing: centuries old songs from Asia Minor, island rhythms from his homeland, well known Athenian songs of the day, and anonymous rebetiko songs. These ten tracks are remastered from the 64 surviving recordings from his early days, many of which have rarely been heard since their original release.
