In March 1992, the immense composer Georges Delerue passed away in Los Angeles, after several decades devoted to music and cinema. In 2012, this anniversary will be the occasion for several tribute concerts with the Orchestre de Lille (On March 2 and 3), in France and Belgium, concerts accompanied by a special week on the airwaves of Radio-Classique. At a time when Delerue's music flourishes on the images of a new generation of filmmakers (La Guerre est déclarée, Fantastic Mr Fox), this album fills a void: a simple record that summarizes the major milestones of the deleruesque journey, clearly and succinctly. It features the composer's standards for François Truffaut (Jules et Jim, La Nuit américaine, Le Dernier métro), Godard (Le Mépris), de Broca (Cartouche, Le Diable par la queue), Louis Malle (Viva Maria !), Claude Miller (Garde à vue), Oliver Stone (Salvador) but also his film songs performed by Brigitte Bardot, Jeanne Moreau, Georges Brassens, Yves Montand. The program concludes with the sublime and prophetic Concerto de l'adieu de Dien Bien Phu, the ultimate soundtrack of Delerue for a French film, and with the reinterpretation of the love theme from The Tribulations of a Chinese in China by Alexandre Desplat, a vibrant tribute from a talent of the new world to the composer who most influenced his vocation. On the occasion of the 2012 celebrations, this anthology Georges Delerue, film music 1961-1992 stands out as a first approach, an initiation to the universe of the great composer: in twenty-four steps, it tells you the story of a son of the North who, from his native Roubaix to the hills of Hollywood, devoted his life to music and cinema, with the greatness of soul of the truly modest.
