Sonates en trio op.4

Description

Un Corelli at the height of his art. The appointment in 1689 of Pietro Ottoboni to the dignity of cardinal of San Lorenzo in Damaso marked the beginning of one of the most splendid artistic patronages in Rome. Passionate about music, Ottoboni supported many musicians: Handel, Pasquini, Scarlatti, and Caldara all were part of his court at one time. A few months after his election, Ottoboni engaged the famous Arcangelo Corelli, not only as first violin but also to conduct the orchestra and control absolutely the sumptuous musical events taking place in his palace or, for example, at San Lorenzo. It was with opus 4, his last collection of trio sonatas, that Corelli expressed in 1694 his gratitude to Cardinal Ottoboni for the protection granted. The collection of twelve sonatas, the pinnacle of a symmetrical production alternating works da chiesa (op. 1 and 3) and da camera (op. 2 and 4), greatly contributed to establishing Corelli's music as a paradigm for the definition of these two genres. In a recording made in June 2012 in Solomeo, Umbria, Enrico Gatti approaches these works with the elegance and delicacy that characterize him, and once again, surrounded by his Ensemble Aurora, he signs an exquisite album that the lover of the best Italian baroque music cannot do without.
