As soon as Emily Nenni steps on stage, she invites everyone to dance. This California-born singer-songwriter, now based in Nashville, wants honky-tonk to be a place of escape, where fans can forget their worries for a few hours and feel safe and free. "I always make sure everyone behaves well on the dance floor." Or, as she sings in the ultra-funky title track of her new album, Movin' Shoes: "Here, you dress for yourself and dance however you want." Movin' Shoes is an album that explores how we treat each other and how we treat ourselves. Steeped in references and filled with compassion, Movin' Shoes eloquently and wryly blends the Southern soul of Memphis and Muscle Shoals with the Southern rock of Macon and the outlaw country of Austin. Creating Movin' Shoes was a true journey of discovery for Nenni. Musically, she found new ways to fuse the very different artists she so admires, and lyrically, she explored new ways to connect with herself and others. "We must always recognize and accept our imperfection," she explains. "We all make mistakes, and we all need to question our approaches. I am imperfect. Everyone around me is. But that's not a bad thing. It just means we are all human. This album is about mistakes and the lessons learned from them. I always try to convey that in my songs."
