‘Vagabond’, Dominic Miller’s third album for ECM, may be the most poetic and striking “tale” he has produced to date. For this album, the artist leads a quartet comprising Ziv Ravitz on drums, his long-time collaborator Nicolas Fiszman on bass, and pianist Jacob Karlzon.
Miller develops the narrative potential of eight new original compositions through the rich textures of melancholic pastel sounds characteristic of the orchestration and collective dynamics based on the interaction of particularly skilled instrumentalists in the art of balancing groove and harmonic sophistication. “It was never my intention to make a guitar album. Thanks to the experience I’ve gained over the years with the incredible singers I’ve worked with, I now consider myself much more an instrumental ‘songwriter’ than a mere instrumentalist.
