Deep Trip 2

Description

In an era marked by superficiality, DJ Maestro - aka Martijn Barkhuis - proves once again that true craftsmanship is timeless. His new album, Deep Trip 2, mixed by DJs, takes the listener on a nocturnal journey into the heart of house, jazz, and soul. There, he does what he does best: bringing forgotten jazz gems back into the spotlight. Deep Trip 2 will be released on May 29, 2026 via Black Hole Recordings. Everyone thinks they're a DJ. But not everyone knows how to mix. Spending an evening behind the decks has become the favorite side gig of all second-rate actors. Dating profiles are overflowing with photos of men and women with headphones wedged between ear and shoulder. And what the Chanel bag is to a woman, the headphones are to the aspiring DJ: the ultimate symbol of success. But being a DJ isn't just about downloading a few tracks and looking irresistible behind your decks. Mixing is an art, whether with traditional vinyl or digital music. And to excel at this art, you need talent and solid training. Just as you can spot a classical background in a visual artist, or guess which Michelin-starred restaurant a chef trained at, you can tell from a DJ's mix whether they truly understand music. Maestro: A craftsman with classical roots. Maestro (aka Martijn Barkhuis, Groningen, 1970) possesses this understanding. Born into a family of musicians, he was introduced to the violin at the age of seven and spent his entire youth playing in youth orchestras. Although he succumbed to Amsterdam's club scene in his twenties, his classical background remains clearly perceptible: in his original choices, in the flawless structure of his mixes, and especially in his impeccable mixing technique. He also has a rare gift for reviving forgotten sounds. Five-time platinum. His "Blue Note Trips" compilations - eight albums for the legendary jazz label Blue Note - achieved worldwide success. These successes earned him numerous international dates at the world's most prestigious venues, as well as five platinum records. Based in Amsterdam, Maestro owns one of the most impressive vinyl collections in the Netherlands and maintains his reputation as the man who dusted off jazz. He repeated this feat for the legendary jazz label Verve and Bethlehem Records (the label that discovered Nina Simone) in New York, once again showcasing his talent: bringing forgotten jazz artists back into the spotlight. Deep Trip 2: Deeper, warmer, unmistakably Maestro. Building on the success of the first opus, released in July 2025 on Black Hole Recordings, Maestro returns with Deep Trip 2. Where the first chapter bridged jazz and house, this new opus explores even greater depths: warmer grooves, hypnotic rhythms, and rich, soulful textures. The whole unfolds like a nocturnal journey, intimate, complex, and unmistakably Maestro. The jazz spirit still hums in the background, but Deep Trip 2 explores lush atmospheres and contemporary, soulful house sounds - the work of an artist who evolves without denying his core identity. An invitation to slow down, let go, and escape into the music.
