ATALAYA is a new work by bassist Dezron Douglas, and it is alive. Alive in all the ways that jazz is at its best—as a pure and personal expression of Black music filtered through traditions by a group of musicians who practice sonic coherence through musical unity. Fans of contemporary jazz may recognize Dezron for his bass work behind Pharaoh Sanders, Louis Hayes, Ravi Coltrane, or Makaya McCraven. More recently, Force Majeure, his sublime duo record with harpist Brandee Younger, compiled the best of their live performances from their Harlem apartment during the covid lockdown. ATALAYA was not lab-processed, but rather captured in the room. Reality is once again at the forefront of the sound, but the difference lies in the energy and ambitions of the music, which has reached the stratosphere. There is poetry, presence, artistic and emotional clarity in every note. Free and dissonant, soft and consonant, expansive and pure. This is the band you hope to hear play every time you walk into a club.
