Misunderstood upon its release by critics who saw it as an apology for the American system (the Republican party even adopted it as a campaign anthem, much to the artist's dismay), "Born In The U.S.A." speaks to the youth of the country; the message is, on the contrary, a warning against all forms of manipulation, supported by a sonic barrage skillfully treated in the studio. It is also filled with nostalgia and contains its share of "magnificent losers" that are its secret. Besides the title track, "Glory Days" (about old age) and the hard-hitting road anthem "Working on the Highway" make it a solid album, probably not the most endearing of his work, but certainly a delight for his banker, with over fifteen million sales in the United States in its release year, and seven consecutive weeks at No. 1!
