For this first album in... well, just a year, Bill Callahan offers us a Gold Record. They may not all be gold, and thankfully not all six years apart either. You could also call it "Gold Records": each track has its own universe, like a single, so you can truly get to know it, create a relationship, from the beginning to the end of each song. And what do you get when you have an album full of singles? A Gold Record. For Bill, preparing to go on tour for Shepherd In a Sheepskin Vest meant being away from home for long periods – months, seasons, maybe a year, who knows? Feeling energetic, Bill jotted down some ideas in a notebook, not finishing all of them. Before he knew it, he recorded them, out of order, and new songs began to appear. It happened quickly. The foundations were recorded live, with Matt Kinsey on guitars and Jaime Zurverza on bass. Drums and brass were added to a few tracks. Six out of ten tracks were recorded in a single take; overdubs, if needed, were added just as quickly. Listening to it, you feel the intuitive cohesion, Bill's titanic voice, the conversation between Bill's and Matt's guitars, the subtle percussion, the effects of brass and synth, the striking and discordant notes, sounding like a soundtrack meant to accompany and express lives lived everywhere. Ten weeks until the album comes out? Why, that sounds like an eternity! Fortunately, the gold rush will begin sooner than that – if you consider every weekend a rainbow, then your Monday will be the treasure at the foot of the rainbow.
