Into the silence

Description

Avishai Cohen makes his debut here as a leader on ECM. His program consists of expansive, impressionistic compositions written for a jazz quartet — trumpet, piano, double bass, and percussion — joined by a tenor saxophone on a few tracks. "Into the Silence" is dedicated to the memory of Avishai's father, David, born from reflection during the final days of his life, full of grace and restraint. Avishai's tender trumpet sets the emotional tone from the album's opening, joined in his tribute by excellent musicians. Israeli pianist Yonathan Avishai improvises creatively on the trumpeter's compositions, sometimes illuminating them with a blues phrasing. Cohen and percussionist Nasheet Waits share a hypersensitive mutual understanding, and their interactions occasionally recall the peak of Miles Davis and Tony Williams or Don Cherry and Billy Higgins. However, his music is perfectly of our time. Bassist Eric Revis provides elegant support to the group, and saxophonist Bill McHenry follows Cohen's lines with feeling. The result is an album that embraces and integrates its influences: modern, rich, and tender.
