Radio Lusaka

Description

Alick Nkhata was one of the great figures of the Zambian music scene at the time of independence. A singer, guitarist, and archivist, he managed to create a unique style blending country, township jazz, and pop, while remaining deeply rooted in Bemba musical traditions. His music reflects the social upheavals of the era: migration to the mines, urban unemployment, family tensions, and the collective hope for a better future. With tracks such as "Nafwaya Fwaya," "Fosta Kayi," and "Nalikwebele Sonka," Nkhata addresses these themes with subtlety, supported by refined vocal harmonies, big band brass, piano, and even early electronic experiments. His greatest success, "Imbote," showcases this successful fusion of tradition and modernity. This vinyl reissue – the very first – brings together some of his most beautiful compositions. It is accompanied by a 12-page booklet featuring previously unreleased photos, translated lyrics, and notes by Jamal Khadar (NTS Radio), offering valuable insight into an essential artist in Zambian musical history.
