Born in Canada, Alexander "Skip" Spence was the co-founder of Moby Grape, a band with which he played guitar until 1969. That same year, he released his only solo album: "Oar". The album was recorded after Spence had spent six months in a psychiatric hospital following an attempted hatchet attack on his Moby Grape bandmates, under the influence of a delusion caused by LSD ingestion. Legend has it that on the day of his release, he rode to Nashville on a motorcycle, wearing only his pajamas, to record his album. In reality, he recorded this album in seven days, playing all the instruments himself, and the result is now considered a classic of psychedelic folk. After this album, Spence largely withdrew from the music world. "Oar" is available in a limited edition of 1,000 individually numbered copies on transparent vinyl.
