THE MONTREAL DUO IS BACK WITH A PRIMITIVE AND HYPNOTIC ELECTRO POP ALBUM Audrey Ann and Kyle Jukka, the two Montrealers who make up She-Devils, like to have fun exploring the sensory world, bringing back into fashion an aesthetic linked to the fantastic and also provoking new sensations in the listener. Thanks to primitive electro, hypnotic vocalizations and a “sound amusement park” as they like to call it, the duo’s album is built around a beautifully chaotic world. Their musical influences, ranging from Iggy Pup to Madunna via T-Rex and Can, as well as the yéyé aesthetic of the 60s, prove the full scope of their universe. “When I sing over a loop, I don’t feel like I’m controlling what I’m doing or that I’m intellectually invested in the process; it’s more like my subconscious takes over my mind and everything comes directly from my dreams,” says singer Audrey Ann. Just listening to the album once is enough to understand what she means. The track “How Do You Feel” is a swirling fantasy about teenage love, “You Don’t Know” a jungle pop hit, and “The World Laughs” an ode to psych rock. It is the connection between the two friends, their tensions, harmonies and oppositions, that makes this new album so personal and ecstatic.
