Soft Hell is a rough and thorny delivery straight from New York City. In this second album driven by insane ingenuity, the post-punk quartet Pill finds recreational enjoyment expressed through dark and caustic humor. Reflecting the contradiction of the title, which refers to the acceptance of our daily misfortunes, this new album is a collage of dichotomies, a frenzied tearing apart. The recipe? Shimmering feedback, a hemorrhage of saxophones, catchy choruses, and a dose of poison. With violent or funny lyrics, direct or cryptic but never didactic. Singer and bassist Veronica Torres, a poet and visual artist, cites J.P. 'The Big Bopper' Richardson and Ian Svenonius among her influences, while saxophonist Benjamin Jaffe aims to provoke through sound, and drummer Andrew Spaulding sees their new album as a critique of the cliché of New York life with its competitive and dangerous pursuit of comfort. Veronica mentions a sexual reference to bondage, linking the album to the cyclical monotony of humans hurting one another. Pill rejects complacency, whether political or creative.
