It would be hard to find a more fitting title than Métamorphoses: June Cocó, the formidable singer, songwriter and pianist from the German city of Leipzig, has recorded a new album, and it would be unfair to describe it as a covers or remixes album, because it is much more than that: a collection of eight extraordinary metamorphoses. The album Métamorphoses begins with a song of the same name, written by the French duo Ravages. June covered it and sent them a recording. They were so impressed that they returned the favor by turning her “Heavy Heart” into an electro-pop song. Inspired by this experience, June Cocó asked several artists to “transform” the songs from her album Fantasies & Fine Lines. Thus, on Métamorphoses, her songs, which often evoke Kate Bush and Florence Welch, appear in turn as soulful ballads (the composition by Jake Nicks and Max Ashner), pieces for harp (Arden), or as electro tracks of refreshing beauty, works by Micronaut or the Berlin techno producer Phonique, who suddenly seems to have left the clubs behind. Undeniably, something connects all these songs. An invisible network of fantasies and “fine lines,” June’s songwriting talents and the creative power of these brilliant musicians, which gives the album title its full meaning.
