Pioneering British singer-songwriter David Gray is back doing what he does best, and fans of intricately crafted, serious, and rich songwriting rejoice. *Dear Life*, his thirteenth album, is perhaps the deepest, strangest, and most beautiful album he has ever produced. David Gray’s story is like no other. He spent close to a decade striving to break through, and when it happened, he did so in a big way: *White Ladder* went on to become one of the biggest-selling British albums of recent decades and established him as a stadium-filling artist. As the years have passed, his songwriting craft has been enhanced by his natural ability to convey specific emotions and atmospheres, or, as heard on his 2021 album *Skellig*, a sense of place – putting him in the lineage of classic poetic singer-songwriters. After years in the making, this is an album of emotional crisis and resolution, of mortality and faith, reality and illusion, love and heartbreak, magic, science, grief, and acceptance. Although full of yearning and hope, there is an undercurrent of darkness, a tension between the competing forces of hope and despair: a cavalcade of emotions in what is his most lyrically focused collection to date.
