Polyphonic songs to dance to. The words, the voices that perch, buzz, and draw bodies into dance. Cocanha projects timbred voices carried by the pulse of string tambourines, feet, and hands. The Occitan language is our playground for exploring singular temperaments and sonorities. Cocanha draws from the traditional Occitan repertoire, sets archives in motion again, and places them back in the flow of orality. Some lyrics are rewritten, others invented, emerging from a shared imagination in the open air. The characters in the songs reclaim their power of desire and assert it. Puput, what a strange bird name. That is the name of our next album: it is the Occitan name for the hoopoe, that bird with a long, graceful, slightly curved beak, with an erectile crest, a harlequin back, and a jerky, bounding flight. We chose it for its subversive force. It comes to question our misogyny and our relationship to social norms. In a centralist French state with a strong colonial past, silencing the languages that inhabit it and standardizing accents, Cocanha chooses to sing in Occitan. We chose to produce this record with Raül Refree: a renowned producer, guitarist, and composer (Rosalía, Lee Ranaldo of Sonic Youth, Niño de Elche, Sílvia Pérez Cruz...). We are teaming up with Refree, a bold experimenter, who has managed to capture the finesse and intensity of Cocanha’s music.
