Based in Brooklyn, James Hinton, aka The Range, will release his new album, Potential, on Domino. For this one, The Range drew inspiration from Baltimore club culture, grime and early-2000s electronica, as well as from his status as a member of the last generation to remember going on the internet for the first time. Built around vocal samples discovered in the depths of YouTube, Potential reveals unknown artists whose expression is freed from all the constraints tied to the music industry. One could be fascinated by the code that determines these YouTube searches, but it is the human stories behind these samples that are truly striking. To accompany the release of the album Potential, a documentary titled Superimpose, directed by Daniel Kaufman, will be released in the spring. It is dedicated to the personal stories behind the unknown artists sampled on the album. As James Hinton explains, "I am very aware that the people I sampled enrich what I do, just as this album takes their work into another environment."
