Released after the triumph of Nevermind, to give the trio a little time to write, this patchwork compilation alternates between the best and the worst. If "Downer" or "Aero Zeppelin" are of interest only historically, reminding us that Nirvana in its early days was nothing more than a punk gang with no particular originality, "Sliver," "Been A Son" or "Aneurysm," on the other hand, are among Kurt Cobain's catchiest compositions, and could have deservedly appeared on Nevermind or In Utero. It is also a pleasure to hear the band cover Devo ("Turnaround") or their beloved Vaselines ("Molly's Lips," "Son Of A Gun"), who would be honored again on the Unplugged album. An essential document for fans.
