The pianist’s only recording for Columbia, Expectations sits between his departure from Miles Davis’s orchestra and his signing to the prestigious ECM label. It marks a true explosion of his polished stylistic talent by giving pride of place to the musicians in his then quartet, made up of Dewey Redman, Charlie Haden and Paul Motian.
