With TV On The Radio and Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Guillemots are one of the few current bands that draw from classic rock without plagiarizing it. Even more dynamic than their previous album Through The Windowpane, this second album is one to mark with a red stone: exuberant pop is back! Their leader is English, but the others come from everywhere. This might be why there is so much to discover in the eleven vibrant songs of Red, which explore various atmospheres (folk, rock, pop, glam) and unfold like peeling an onion with a blowtorch. Kriss Kross, Get Over It, Clarion, or Last Kiss, almost B-52's, even invite you to dance, and you find yourself dreaming of dance floors where this music would be welcome. The oriental Cockateels dares to cross other boundaries, Words blends into autumnal languor, Standing On The Last Star recalls the best of China Crisis (as if Bono no longer took himself seriously), while Don't Look Down and Take Me Home close the album on calmer tones that allow Fyfe Dangerfield's vocal talent to shine, never more reassuring than when he puts himself in artistic danger.
